There’s a lot of personal development advice that suggests we should overcome fear.
I used to be a self-improvement junkie.
One of my favorite authors during that time, Napoleon Hill, had this concept - the 6 ghosts of fear.
They’re 6 idealogical fears that we needed to overcome to be successful:
- fear of poverty
- fear of criticism
- fear of ill health
- fear of loss of love
- fear of old age
- fear of death.
Don’t.
But I’ve grown to disagree.
And I was reading an issue of Uncanny X-Men (#145) yesterday that clearly explains my thoughts on fear now.
Cyclops is fighting this guy named D’spayre.
The villain uses a persons fear to cause them a despair so immense that they can’t move.
He does this to Cyclops and almost kills him, until Cyclops does something epic.
He embraces the fear.
Here’s the panel where it happens (it’s so powerful).
And by accepting his fear, Cyclops is able to overcome and defeat D’spayre.
That’s how I think I want to deal with fear in my life.
I don’t want to run from it.
I don’t want to spend my life fighting it.
To me, it feels like a natural part of life, so I want to embrace and accept fear.
But I won’t let it rule me.
We must not let our fear become perpetual despair.
We don’t have to be scared of “fear”, we only need to learn how to transmute it through embrace and acceptance.
