I’ve learned something powerful as I’ve matured into an adult.
The idea that “where your energy/attention flows is what grows” isn’t just some fancy metaphysical idea.
The concept is immediately tangible every day in all aspects of our lives.
I made this post on Threads the other day about my daily routine.
People asked me about how long it took to get “disciplined.”
Others had questions about meditation.
However, the thing that I wish people noticed more was the deep work.
But, that’s the “hard part” though, so it makes sense that most people just glossed over it.
They think some discipline hack will finally get them what they desire.
Or believe that meditation will unlock their potential to achieve greatness.
The truth is that no amount of discipline or meditation (or anything else) will ever change the fact that you still need to sit down and do work.
I can find endless examples in my life of how focused effort helped me get what I want:
- It helped me get a D1 football scholarship.
- It helped me become a professional music producer.
- It helps me keep my body fat below 10%
But it works both ways.
Focused effort on the wrong things has, at times:
- Made me a bad boyfriend.
- Caused me to be careless with money.
Something I learned from reading a book called “Mastery” (by Robert Greene) is that the human mind is designed to focus, and to put effort behind that focus.
You’re always focusing.
If you’re unconscious about it, you’ll focus on whatever your mind is conditioned to, or whatever is easiest for it to latch on to.
But the cool thing is that you can control the direction of this focus.
You get to control the intensity of your effort.
And this allows you to get what you really want out of life.
So if you want to start getting better at being a producer, find time to devote focused effort.
One way is by time blocking.
Set aside time and just work on music or content or business (networking, publishing, syncs, etc.).
You can also make your time blocks easier by breaking them up into smaller chunks (this is the “pomodoro” method).
So if you devote 1 hour, you can split it up into 2 25-minute work chunks with a 5 minute break after each.
As you progress, you can go for longer (your break should be 1/5 to 1/3 the amount of time you worked - the longer your work block , the longer your break, but try not to exceed 1/3 of your work time as the break).
And this is FOCUSED WORK.
Phone on silent and out of reach.
No distractions.
Just work.
Consistently doing this is how you get good at anything.
Wanna get good at an instrument? Focused daily work in practice is how you do it.
Wanna learn a new language? Consistent focus on learning is the only way it’ll happen - even if you learn a language passively, it’s because you had to use effort to focus on how to do it (this is literally how you learned the language you speak now when you were a baby).
If you aren’t where you want to be as a producer, I’m 80% sure it’s because you’ve underestimated how much work you need to put into it.
So start working.
